The temperature controller system is one of the important parts of a whole hot runner system.when the hot runner system is under the status of balance heating.the ideal system will keep the given temperature,and the heaters will keep supplying the heat to compensate the losen heat.and the temperature is controlled by the thermocouples.which is used to precisely controlled the nozzles and the manifolds temperature.

The heater power of the nozzle and the manifold must be calculated very precisely and correctly chosen.the heaters must be very correctly distributed among the hot runenr system,and every heat area should be have a right temperature test point.

1.how to divide the heating area on manifold-hot runner temperature controller
Usually,we divide the manifold into several heating area,and control the temperature independlly,every heating area control one nozzle or one manifold heater.the image 5-1 shows for rather big manifold,we have to divide it into several heating area to controller the temperature.espencially when the injection position is not symmetrical.as well as the plastic material is difficult to inject like PBT、PET、PA66 ect.and how many heating area depends on how many nozzles and the size of the manifold.

Beside the manifold heaters need hot runner temperature controller zone,the nozzle also is a independent heating area,except for a few short main runner doesn't need heating area,most of the main runner also need hot runner temperature controller zone.Usually, the fewer number of the heating area ,the lower hot runner system will cost.but it is not good for precisely temperature controlling.
every heating zone has its own thermocouple and heater(heater coil),and on the outside of the manfiold and the outside of the temperature controller box (see the image 5-2),there are both socket for connecting the thermocouple and heaters ,and every wire must be connected correctly,otherwire the hot runner temperature controller will be damaged.The most common used socket are 4pins、16pins、24Pins to control 1 zone、4zone and 6 zone of hot runner system.The more of heating zones,the wire pins will be 4 times more.and sometimes a hot runner system needs more than 1 socket on the manfiold,of course need more than 1 socket on the hot runner temperature controller too.

For example,in the image 5-2,the hot runner temperature controller has 6 zones to control the nozzles and manifold and the main runner nozzle.thus the socket needs at least 24pins .

Mostly,electronic heaters are used as the nozze heaters and hot runner nozzle heaters,see the image1,the nozzle only needs a couple of minutes to be heated up.and the thermocouple is put at the place near the injection sprue.and every nozzle is a seperated heating area.

In the image1a,the cutting section is round and connected by bolted.this type of heaters usually not used to be nozzle heaters or hot runner nozzle heaters.because on the heating surface the heating density is only 0.3W/cm2
In the image1b,the cutting section is rectangle.which makes the heaters have the biggest touch area with the nozzle ,thus it has about 6-5W/cm2of heating density.this kind of heater is most commonly used nozzle heaters.for shis type of hot runner nozzle heaters,we should know the heat distribution on the nozzle surface.usually we can control the heat distribution by controlling the distance between each circle of heater that around the nozzle.which can form the bellowed heat distribution image2.in the image2 we can see the heater is most spread at the side-the connection place between the manfiold and the nozzle and the place of the inejction sprue.at these two places.the heat is about 40% of the whole heat at each side.and only 20% of the heat is located in the middle.

In the image1c,it is a tube heater which uses a tube at the outside of a heater.this type of nozzle heaters has the same as the rectangle heater with 40-20-40 heat distribution.and has as high as 15W/cm2.it is very well used in high temperature heating and also of course is widely used in hot runner nozzle heaters field.
In the image1d is cast type electonic heater coil.it put the round heater cast inside of the copper tube.it has very good heating and highest durability,but as the tooling is very complicated.so it is seldom used for hot runner nozzle heaters.

At present,in the hot runner system field.the mostly used heating way is image3 nozzle heaters.it is ring-type hot runner nozzle heaters.and theoretically to say,the heating transfering can be as hig as 25%.

Only after the development of hot runners for thermoplastics did that section of the industry which was still involved with thermoset molding try to develop an equivalent method for thermosets.However,the range of products that would lend themselves economically to "runnerless"molding(as hot runner molding is somtimes called)is very limitied and mainly includes only small products made from phenolics.alkyds,and some rubbers.As a result,the development of hot runner molds is lagging behind,and there is little published in this field.

1.Themperature control from extruder to gate must be very accurate to prevent scorching of the material.
2.Accessibility to the hot runner system to remove hot runners and the end of a production run(or in case of interruptions)must be easy.
3.Thermal insulation is necessary from the relatively cold machine platen and from the heated mold.The mold is heated to a much higher temperature to achieve fast curing in the cavity;this could influence the runner system.
4.Nozzle area is of particular importance because of the unavoidable contact of two elements with differment temperatures.The nozzle forms part of the hot runner system;the gate is part of the mold.
5.Plastic Flow:Because of the higher viscosity of thermosets,the passages must be larger than those used for thermocouplastics.

In the combined-type hot runner system,nozzle and manifold form a simple unit.The melt flow directly from the manifold into the nozzle , and will not produce deviation and flow blind horn.Through the thread nozzle to be embedded manifold and eliminating leakage phenomenon of the nozzle and manifold.
The traditional bushing system design will prodece the thermal expansion,and this combination of system is particularly effective in such leakage.
The combined-type hot runner located in the middle of the mould and have less connection with the mould.
Its manufacturing materials shouldn't have high thermal conductivity, also does not need the ground-clamp and to mould set of advance and tension. The minimum level of connection provides high precision and stable temperature curve, so the expenditure of energy than traditional hot runner system are much lower.
Usually, combined-type hot runner system reduces the maintenance cost. The complete hot runner system based on the prepared design and installation, assembly process in heater or thermocouple wire be removed. Connect heater and distribution box wires was placed in a special design of the tube, the mold or the removal of hot runner system is very favorable. At the same time, comprehensive hot runner system can be removed from the daily maintenance, and save the time and reduce the incidence of the assembly error.

Use the full cross and the heat conductor with sysytem intergration is the best choice for hot runner. and probably under the circumstances as follows should be avoided:Only a circular cross center heating system can produce high pressure loss. To pom, flame retardant level these high thermal material, the runner should be designed to bypass the perfect as far as possible.
The nozzle should be used fully open to cross external heating system. Melt should not be in the gate area where is divided into several strands of melt. Feeding the distribution of connection form of embedded should be adapted to the conditions which will get the average temperature distribution.
If you must use hard-wearing material to make the nozzle head, can use interchangeable nozzle head, this is an advantage.and can also use small torpedo head nozzle head.
Generally speaking,in the processing of formaldehyde should not use enclosed nozzle. If other plastic formulate use needle valve nozzle, the combination of nozzle/needle should make as far as possible to reduce the pressure loss. For a hot runner system,leakage is very unacceptable.but for making sure it doesn't happen, so for prevent hot runner leaks,thermal expansion must be taken into consideration when designing the hot runner system. For cold runner system,the plastic melt solidify very fast after injeciton and pressure holding.but the mould is always under a cool temperature circustance.thus,leakage seldom happens.but for a hot runner system mould.it works under a really high temperature and fast shocking,installed in room temperature but used in high one.so all this like thermal deformation of the manifold 、incrroect designing of hot runner system、installation、technology etc.among these reasons. the incorrect injection technology and high pressure injection is the main reasons.espencially low viscosity plastic like PP and PE.hot to prevent hot runner leaks.
to prevent hot runner leaks is very important because it can cause the mould stop working .but it is very difficult to see the hot runner system leaks from the outside .when you see the products can't be fullfilled when the shot is right,,then leakage might happens.
for how to prevent hot runner leaks.first of all should know where it could happen.there are usually two places that can cause leakage:1.the end face.2. the connection place between gate and manifold.
